St Andrew’s Uniting Church congregation will this weekend celebrate 60 years since the doors opened on its new church building.

Back then the prominent Gothic-style building on the corner of Pynsent and Urquhart streets was home to Horsham's Presbyterian church, undergoing a name change in 1977 when Presbyterian and Methodist churches combined to form Horsham Uniting Church.

Churchgoers also will celebrate 168 years of worship in Horsham with a special church service and barbecue lunch on Sunday at 10am. All are welcome.

Guest speaker for the service will be former Wimmera Uniting Church minister the Rev Graeme Sutton of Ballarat.

The first Presbyterian services in Horsham were in 1858. A church was built on the current site a year later, from Heatherly Quarry stone from the Grampians. It stood for 88 years before being replaced.

The current church building includes stone from the first. Work began in 1962, making it the third church built on that site. In the mid 1990s the current hall replaced an earlier one that had to be demolished.

The church was dedicated on November 9, 1963.

Cafe Worship, an informal ecumenical get together, and Messy Church, which is geared at families, are held monthly.

The former Horsham Methodist Church was repurposed to become Wesley Performing Arts Centre and used for theatre and music performances until recently.

St Andrew's Uniting Church in Horsham and District also includes churches at Rupanyup, Murtoa, Natimuk, Goroke, Minimay, Dimboola and Pimpinio.
