Over 50 people attended a special celebratory dinner at the Beulah football clubrooms on Friday October 20.
The Beulah Lions Club celebrated 50 years of exemplary service to the community at the dinner, which was chaired by Lion Danny Naylor.
The dinner guests heard that in 1973, local identity, the late Murray {Gus} Shannon became interested in Lions International, a world-wide organisation. With the support of several community minded men and the sponsorship from the Lions’ Club of Birchip, the first service club to be formed locally became reality. The Lions’ Club of Beulah was officially formed on the 11th July, 1973; with a membership of twenty-five charter members. A Charter Dinner was held in the Beulah Memorial Hall in September of that year to officially celebrate the formation of the local Lions’ Club, and several guests were invited from neighbouring Lions’ Clubs and local organisations.
The Lions’ Club of Beulah {L. C. B.} was formed in July, 1973,
Lions District Governor Harry Brindlay said, “the Beulah Lions Club has a proud history of support to Lions International contributing to many projects, both locally and internationally.”
He said, “the club was the sponsor of the Housing Commission units by donating the land and maintenance of the gardens over many years.”
“It has developed the Beulah Creek Reserve and Caravan Park, now managed by the Creek Committee, as well as the Wayside Stop.”
“Beulah Lions set up the recycling program for scrap metal, glass and cans, while also mowing and maintaining the Beulah and Rosebery cemeteries.”
“The club is a host to the Christmas Eve party and Australia Day breakfast and has made and continues to make numerous contributions to the community over the last 50 years, Mr Brindlay said.
Four serving charter members: Maurie Williams, Ted Lehmann, Stewart Allen and Tony Naylor jointly cut the 50th anniversary celebratory cake.
The club currently has 17 members.
A comprehensive history of the club was compiled by Lynette Williams for the celebration, which the Herald plans to publish in the near future.
