Celebration topped by settlement

Warracknabeal Community Garden celebrated its 10th birthday last weekend with a sustainability workshop, birthday cake, and a free lunch, with guest of honour Costa Georgiadis joining the festivities.

Within days of the party, the garden received the best birthday present possible - confirmation that the community garden is now community-owned.

On Tuesday September 10, settlement took place, and the Warracknabeal Action Group are now the proud owners of the Scott Street block.

The group had hoped to announce the purchase as part of the birthday celebrations, however things were not quite finalised in time.

President Avril Hein advised those present that “hopefully we are within days of making an announcement about the sale”.

And she was right.

Costa is a Community Gardens Australia ambassador, and he said the Warracknabeal Community Garden is the only garden in Australia centrally located in the main street of town.

The choice of this location was made possible by the generosity of the previous owner, and via a community consultation process in 2014 that clearly identified 100 Scott Street as an ideal location for such a garden.

The purchase of the land would not have been possible without the generosity of many.

Community Garden treasurer Neacie Kranz said the community response to the call for financial assistance was wonderful and overwhelming, a credit to our whole town.

The community garden will now work towards acknowledging and thanking all those who have assisted in making this dream come true.
