Club welcomes 96th president
Since its charter in November 1928 the Rotary Cub of Horsham has had many a steady hand at the helm, and it recently appointed its 96th president to take over from Michael Spiers.
Loloma Puls and her husband Col have spent the better part of 40 years serving as Rotarians, and Mrs Puls' first order of business as Rotary Club of Horsham's new president was to introduce the 2024 theme.
The theme, The Magic of Rotary, was chosen by Rotary world president Stephanie Urehick from Pennsylvania, US.
Ms Urehick was visiting a small African village where Rotary had been instrumental in installing running water when a little boy tugged her arm and said: "Show me the magic again".
The little boy was amazed to see clean water flowing freely and, at the turn of a tap, able to be turned off.
Mrs Puls spoke of the times she had witnessed the magic of Rotary at work in Thailand, Africa and India.
The June 28 event's guest speaker was Dr Jessie Harman from Ballarat.
Dr Harman spoke about her two years as Rotary International's international director, describing all of the projects around the world which were funded by the Rotary Foundation's hard work and how that money went towards making the world a better place.
Jenny and Doug Mitchell were both recognised as Paul Harris Fellows in honour of their $US1000 donation to the Rotary Foundation, and were commended for their work in Horsham and at Reedy Dam in the Mallee.
Mr Harris founded Rotary in 1905 in Chicago, kick-starting an organisation that almost 120 years later has more than 1.2 million members in 221 countries.
Mrs Puls said the Rotary Club of Horsham was now looking forward to a year of fun and fellowship and she hoped it would be able to share more of the magic of Rotary.
