Drung and St Michael’s to fight for premiership
St Michael's is set to face Drung South Purple in the 2021/22 Central Wimmera Tennis grand final after an upset in the semi-finals.
ST MICHAEL’S is set to face Drung South Purple in the 2021/22 Central Wimmera Tennis grand final after an upset in the semi-finals.
At the top of the ladder, Horsham Lawn were the anticipated favourites but went down to Drung South Purple in a very close game.
With six sets to their name each, it came down to the final games for Drung South to come from the fourth position to win by two games.
Horsham Lawn’s Cherie Wood was the only player to win all her three sets.
The closest matches were two doubles matches that came down to the final games.
Horsham Lawn’s Graeme Wood and Stuart Mcrae defeated Drung South’s Dylan Emmerson and Aaron Jennings, eight to seven, and Horsham Lawn’s Tahlia Thompson and Cherie Wood defeated Kate-Lyn Perkin and Yolanda Francis, eight to seven.

In the other semi-final, St Michael’s came back from being five sets to one down to win by nine games over Kalkee.
The game finished six sets each, with 73 games to St Michael’s and 64 games to Kalkee.
St Michael’s Jess McDonald was the only player to win all her three sets.
St Michael’s Ian Nitschke and Kalkee’s Grant Schultz had a tough hit out with Schultz coming out on top with an eight to seven games final score.
In the doubles, the closest match also went to eight to seven games with St Michael’s Kassie Peachey and Angela Nitschke coming out on top over Melissa Beddison and Anna Exell.
Drung South Purple and St Michael’s met twice throughout the season, in round two and round seven, with St Michael’s having to forfeit in round 12.
In both rounds, St Michael’s came out on top by two sets, with games in round two being 78 to 63 and in round seven, games were 78 to 58.
In A Special, Natimuk will play Horsham Lawn Thompson; in A Grade, Haven will play Horsham Lawn Bardell; and in B Special, Laharum will play St Michael’s.
All grand finals will be played at Horsham Lawn.
