Horsham Calisthenics Celebrate 50 Years
Horsham Calisthenics marked a remarkable milestone on the weekend, celebrating its 50th anniversary with an end-of-year concert, reunion, and presentation day that brought together the community and past members of the club.

The concert, held at the Horsham Town Hall, was a vibrant showcase of talent, featuring performances from teams and soloists. Principal Coach Kylie Hermans expressed her delight at the event, stating, "It's a terrific event where the girls go out and have fun without the pressure of a competition."
The community turnout was significant, highlighting the strong support for the club.
On Saturday evening, the club hosted a reunion attended by original founder Jill Hill, who reflected on the club’s beginnings. Jill, who moved to Horsham from Melbourne in 1974 after competing with Avonde Calisthenics Club, saw an opportunity to introduce calisthenics to the region. She believed it was essential to help local women and girls develop poise, grace, and coordination through music.
“I commenced my first classes at the Horsham Youth Club Hall, which was next to the Horsham town pool,” Jill recalled. As the numbers grew, she enlisted the help of Marge Flannigan and Debra Shearer, both of whom played pivotal roles in the club's early days.
Horsham Calisthenics entered its first competition in 1976 at Maribyrnong in Melbourne. By 1981, the club successfully held its own competition at Horsham High School Hall, continuing there until the new auditorium was built at the Horsham Town Hall.
Jill eventually passed the leadership torch to Dianne and Janine Hobbs, along with Kylie Hermans, who quickly earned their teaching qualifications. “They have done an exceptional job, and I extend my eternal gratitude to them,” Jill remarked. She also expressed heartfelt thanks to key contributors over the years.
In a touching moment during the reunion, Principal Coach Kylie Hermans presented Jill with a Life Membership of the Horsham Calisthenics Club, recognising her foundational impact on the organisation.
The celebration continued on Sunday with a presentation day, where teams were awarded for their achievements. Five girls received Coach's Awards for their dedication and teamwork: Aubree Schnaars (Tinies), Sophie Petering (Sub-Juniors), Sally Bowell (Juniors), Stephanie Wundke (Intermediates), and Ebonie Janetzki (Seniors).
Years of Participation Badges were also awarded to Tiffany Petering and Adelaide Hardy for five years of membership, with Caitlin Devlin recognised for her remarkable 20 years with the club.
The afternoon concluded with a special recognition for Coach Dianne Walter, who received a Life Membership. Dianne began her journey with the club as a student in 1974 and has since contributed as a coach and mentor, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
As Horsham Calisthenics looks to the future, the 50th anniversary celebration serves as a testament to its enduring legacy and commitment to fostering talent and camaraderie among its members.
