Townscape committee secretary Joy Swagerman said a petition has been created highlighting the increased need for safety upgrades to intersections along the Henty Highway at Kelsell, Lyle and Gardiner Streets.

There are currently only three streetlights along the 1.5 kilometre stretch of highway as it passes through town.

"We have an ageing population, and people with disabilities, and we've had many near misses there," Ms Swagerman said.

"With the new hay plant going in, there will be an increase in trucks and employees using our roads."

Ms Swagerman said Yarriambiack Shire Council have struggled to make headway with VicRoads, despite advocating on behalf of the community for years, and that they're hoping a community voice will help.

"The council has already lobbied for it, but have been knocked back," she said.

"All backing from the community is appreciated, and letters of support would be great as well."

The committees are calling for more lighting along the highway, as well as the creation of turning lanes to ensure motorists can safely exit onto main sideroads.

They are also looking to reduce speed along the Henty Highway entering Warracknabeal from 80kmph to 70kmph for safety reasons.

"It's the small things that all help create a bigger issue," Ms Swagerman said.

"We know it's an issue, and this is to get people aware it's happening.”

Ms Swagerman said a petition will be posted out to businesses, community clubs and groups for local residents to sign before being presented to VicRoads.
