Obst and Sproule win prestigious event
On Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20, the Horsham Golf Club held its annual Women's Life Members 4B Stroke Nett Aggregate Event, which was sponsored by life members Sandra Savage and Joyce Mills.
It's a prestigious tournament, one which every player strives to win.
Mills has been a club member for 47 years, performing various roles such as board course committee member, captain, and secretary.
Savage has been a member for 30 years and was the only female president of the club from 1999 to 2002.
Shirley Sproule and Julie Obst won this year's event with 306 points. On 307 points, Lisa Jakobi and Peggy Muszkeita were runners-up.
Sproule and Obst only came together a week before to partner for the event, as they are among the social golf girls who play on Monday, and Obst said she was thrilled to win.
"It's over two days, and you have to play stroke. You must keep going no matter where you go, whether in bunkers or under trees. Both Shirley and I played well," Obst said.
"Shirley is a very strong player and a nice person, and it was good to win with her.
"It's a prestigious event, and I have been humbled by the amount of people that have contacted me since and congratulated us. I don't think I will get the chance to win it again, so it was a big thrill for me."
They led by one shot heading into Thursday's round, which was challenging with the rain.
"The first nine holes on Thursday was hard playing in the rain, but we both hung in there," Obst said.
"It was hard to talk over the rain, but Shirley said at one point during the round to hang in there as she believes we are still with them."
"Considering most of the ladies always play together, it is great to come together at the last minute and win."
