Our regional advocate

The Horsham Times has partnered with Wimmera Southern Mallee Development to present a series of columns - on the first Friday of every month - exploring the wide and varied aspects of the organisation's work and influence as an advocate for economic and community prosperity in the region. This month, project manager Binesh Tholath discusses the organisation's training courses partnership with Federation University.

Have you ever thought about working in health care? Or would you like to
return to the industry after a break?

If aged care or disability care is something you are interested in, we’re running a course at Fed Uni from October 17, for people to study for a Certificate III in Individual Support.

The special thing about this course is that it’s free and flexible. It’s specifically designed for people who face barriers to conventional tertiary study, like being home with young children, living outside of Horsham or needing more support to be able to study.

This study program is designed to work with you to provide practical support - like fuel vouchers, borrowing a laptop, textbooks or extra tutoring - and we’ll make sure you have teachers close by.

But also, where possible, we’ll provide options for you to study at a time that best suits your life circumstances.

As part of the training, we’ll liaise with you to arrange work placements in the region and even help connect you to future employment opportunities so you’re well on your way!

The Certificate III in Individual Support course is just one of several that will be delivered by Wimmera Southern Mallee Development in partnership with Federation University in Horsham.

We were successful in securing almost $1m from the Victorian Government over two years to run the courses for people in the region.

We’re already delivering Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, supporting 12 students to start a new career in the education and care of children.

With the Federal Government recently announcing that it will support a 15 per cent increase in wages for ECEC workers, we hope to inspire more people to make this change.

We will be offering this course early next year too, so if you are interested, please get in touch.

We are also keen to hear from anyone who’s interested in studying for a Certificate IV in Community Services.

Just think, this time next year, we’ll have 12 new childcare professionals ready to work in our region in a great career, and at least 48 additional childcare spots in the region for parents.

And, after October next year, there will be another cohort of workers ready to provide individual support to the people in our region who need help to care for themselves.

This is your chance to make a life-changing decision with lots of support and encouragement by us along the way.
