HORSHAM College students celebrate multiculturalism with a Harmony Day Fiesta that included sharing games, food, clothing and dancing.

Horsham College student and Karen dancer Sarah Pokyaut said she performed two dances at the Harmony Day Fiesta.

“It feels nice because I get to represent my culture and let others know what our traditional dances dance,” she said.

“Horsham is a really small town so it was good to be able to show off our culture at school.”

Horsham College student and Karen dancer Ehp’sawpaw Talee said it was good to perform and entertain people by showing her culture.

“It feels great to be dancing and I like performing,” she said.

“It means a lot for the school to put on the event and give us a way to express ourselves.”

Event organiser Yoldane Grosser said the school was lucky to have so many students come from different countries and cultures.

“We tried to do as many different games, food, dancing and languages at the event as we could,” she said.

“We have such a multicultural student body and we wanted to celebrate that.”

Ms Grosser said the VET Kitchen Operations students cooked the 200 serves of Nasi Goreng that were served to the students on the library green.

“We even had the traditional egg on top and undressed tomato on the side,” she said.

“We went through three dozen bottles of Bickfords cloudy apple, mango ice tea and pink grapefruit cordial, 250 Asian Jellies and 300 Kookas Country Cookies.”

Horsham College school captain Bart Turgoose said it was important for the school to host events like the fiesta for the students to enjoy getting together and sharing culture.

“It’s pretty important that we celebrate all cultures as a diverse nation and the school is quite diverse and it’s important to support them,” he said.
