‘Rallying’ for a close and good cause

There are numerous good causes, all valid and important to our community, but this one has a rather personal connection to our community with the rather oddly named, ‘The Sh*tbox Rally-Autumn event’ which raises funds for research for the Cancer Council.

David Edwards’ son-in-law, Robbie Charles (Marysknoll) and his mate Matthew Hoiles (Beaconsfield) called into Warracknabeal on Friday in their 1987 Mercedes SE 300. The boys started competing in the rally three years ago to support Janine during her treatment for cancer and of course his partner Mel, David and Janine’s daughter.

The Posh Yobbo’ team as they call themselves headed off to the start of the rally, launched from Adelaide over the weekend on the way to Perth via Oodnadatta and Yulara in an epic adventure mostly off the beaten track of over 4,995 kilometres.

Robbie said, “the ‘Sh*tbox Rally’ is not a race, but rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable…to drive cars worth just $1,500 across Australia, via some of its most formidable roads, all in the name of charity”.

“The record breaking amount of funds raised is an awesome total of $45 million to date, the positive impact we have on local remote communities and the overall experiences of the rally teams themselves combine to become a hugely rewarding experience for all involved,” he said.

“This rally is for those who want to have an adventure, have fun, who crave something different, who want to make new life long friends, take part in something memorable but most importantly, it’s for those who want to raise much needed money for charity. Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another,” he said.

Mr Charles said, “whether it be parents, family, close friends, people we know or ourselves that have battled or are battling cancer, this awful disease has touched us all. We not only want to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council, but also want to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.”

The boys have typically raised up to $13,500 on each run, but are little down on fundraising this year at around $10,500 so far, so for those wishing to make a contribution to the team or the event, please go to the following links.
