Damascus College Ballarat's Sustainable Racing Team Makes a Difference
In a remarkable journey that spans over a thousand kilometers, the Sustainable Racing Team from Damascus College Ballarat is not just riding bicycles; they're riding for a cause.
Setting off from Broken Hill with a mission to raise awareness for sustainable transport and funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Foundation, these students are making waves in their community and beyond.
Led by a group of 14 students ranging from Year 7 to 12, the team has taken on various roles essential for their journey. From logistics to solar management, each student contributes their skills and passion to the cause. And while the physical and mental challenges along the way have tested their resilience, their determination remains unwavering.
The significance of this journey is deeply personal for the team, as they honor the memory of past student Connor, who lost his battle with bowel cancer at the age of 25. Inspired to make a difference, these students have embarked on a mission that goes beyond the miles they cover.
"We had to do something," said Oscar Howlett, a Year 9 student and member of the team. "It's been 15 years since Damascus College has done a road journey, and this one holds a special place in our hearts."
From Broken Hill, their journey took them through Mildura, Sea Lake, Horsham, and Ararat before their anticipated arrival in Ballarat. Accompanied by two support vehicles, the team has navigated through different terrains and weather conditions, facing challenges head-on with determination and grit.
Despite occasional livestream dropouts, their journey has garnered significant attention, with viewers following their progress on YouTube and generously contributing to their cause.
As of Wednesday, donations have already reached $4,500, proving that these students are indeed making a difference, one pedal at a time.
With their top speed reaching 74kmph and an average speed of 60-70kmph, the Sustainable Racing Team is not just racing against the clock; they're racing for a future where cancer research can bring hope and healing to countless lives.
As they pedal closer to their destination, their message rings loud and clear: together, we can make a difference. And with every kilometer they conquer, they inspire us all to believe in the power of community, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of a better world.
