Warracknabeal and Ouyen secure round one wins

On a beautiful, sunny, yet dewy Saturday morning, the white pants came out of the wardrobe, the stumps went into the ground, and just like that, Junior cricket was underway for season 2024-25.

Warracknabeal District Junior Cricket Association kicked away on Saturday morning with two games being played.

The Ouyen juniors took on the Southern Mallee Giants ONE over at Blackburn Park in Ouyen, while Warracknabeal hosted The Southern Mallee Giants TWO at the Brim Recreation Reserve.

The Ouyen Juniors team looks like it will be very strong this season. They amassed 4 for 92 from their 25 overs, and Nigel Hamilton stood out with 18 runs. Max Roberts took 4/9 (4) for the Giants.

Ouyen contained the Southern Mallee Giants ONE to just 5 for 54 from their 25 overs. Max Roberts was the standout with 17 runs, while Adam Grace was the pick of the Ouyen bowlers with 2/7 (4).

Over at Brim, the Warracknabeal side, through an attack spearheaded by Chad Hartnett, who took 3 for zero off 2 overs, were able to dismiss Hampton for just 32 runs. Charlie Slater also took three wickets, finishing at 3/1 (1.4).

In reply, Warracknabeal made 50 runs for just the loss of six wickets from their 25 overs, with Chad Hartnett scoring six.

Round two commences next week with games at Brim and Hopetoun.

The Wimmera Mallee Cricket Association begins its three Rounds of trial games on Sunday, October 20. Under-15 and Under-13 games are scheduled at Donald, featuring Warracknabeal, Hopeton, and Ouyen Juniors.

These games are to prepare the children for Country Week Carnivals later in January 2025.
