The two students were among seven from three colleges who competed in regional finals at Nhill College.

Each gave a prepared 10-minute speech relating to a key Legacy value, then an impromptu two-minute talk on the topic "Should social media access be restricted until children reach 16 years of age?"

Goroke P-12 College had three students competing, with Kaniva and Nhill colleges contributing two each.

Saskia Albrecht of Nhill College was placed third.

Legacy Foundation provided cash awards for the students.

Adjudicators for the event were June Liddy, Denise Queale and Anita Masiero, all of Horsham.

Wimmera Legatees Neil Popple, Lorraine Bald, Phil Nicks and Neville Smith organised the event with help from Nhill College vice-principal Kim Magrath.

The winner of the Ballarat event will have compete for the state award.

That champion will in turn be in contention for the national award.

Mrs Liddy said she was disappointed that more schools did not accept an invitation to participate, as public speaking was of immense value to participants.

Wimmera Legacy also expressed disappointment that schools failed to respond to several invitations to enter students in the event.
